Why are the letters grouped in this manner?
The grouping of the alphabet letters has been calculatingly assigned using the relative frequency of letter appearance in the beginning of English words. In other words, I determined how many letters to group with one another based on what percentage of English words started with each letter in the alphabet according the [wiki]Letter_frequency[/wiki] article on Wikipedia. The following table illustrates the calculations.
